On a wing and a prayer in Westlife's tribute to Jade

ACCIDENT VICTIM Jade Skain has been sent special get well wishes from her pop idols Westlife.

The 13-year-old, who was knocked down by a car almost four weeks ago, had planned to go and see the band perform in Sheffield, but is still very poorly in hospital.

Although she was recently moved out of intensive care, Jade, of Southsea Road, Woodhouse, has not spoken since the accident and still has only limited movement.

Doctors are unsure what lasting effects Jade will suffer as a result of fracturing her skull after being hit by a car on a pedestrian crossing on Retford, Road, Handsworth.

The Handsworth Grange pupil was on her way home from school when the accident happened on June 27, and over a dozen schoolmates watched the horror unfold.

Since Jade was injured, her parents Jane, aged 31, and Dean , 34, have kept a vigil at her bedside in the Sheffield Children's Hospital and their youngest daughter Mia has moved in with Jane's mum Maureen Simmonite, and her partner Mac McClarence, of New Cross Walk, Woodhouse.

The family has already had to cancel a planned holiday, and they auctioned Jade's tickets to see Westlife to raise money for the Children's Hospital as they knew she would be unable to see her heroes perform.
But when the Irish quintet read about Jade in The Star last week they wanted her to know they were thinking of her.

So the caring lads invited Maureen and Mia to see them perform at the Hallam FM Arena last night.

Despite a hectic schedule on the penultimate performance of their three-and-a-half month Unbreakable tour, Bryan, Nicky, Shane, Kian and Mark all took the time to meet the pair before the show.

As the lads posed for pictures they all sent Jade their love, and when Nicky found out he was Jade's favourite band member he gave Mia a kiss to 'pass on' to her big sister!

Then, during their performance, thoughtful Nicky dedicated the band's chart topping hit Flying Without Wings "to Jade in hospital".

Maureen said: "When Nicky dedicated the song to Jade, I cried. It was so nice of him, they are such lovely lads, so ordinary and caring.

"I had originally felt guilty about going because I didn't want to be enjoying myself while Jade was in hospital but I decided to come for her, and for Mia as well.

"Mia has been so good throughout this whole thing, so she deserved something too."

Maureen added: "Jade is improving a little at a time and we think she can understand what we are saying

"What Westlife have done for her was such a nice thing and we are all very grateful.

"I am sure it will put a smile on Jade's face."

I'm sick..i mean, really sick. Kinda drowsy now cuz of da medication...n my head feels so heavy. I hate da feeling. I din't go 2 sch 2dae. So i haf time 4 da com 4 a while. Yeah, i dun need 2 take chem CA...dun haf 2 attend add. math remedial either. Dun haf 2 study 4 chem CA 2. But hey, i feel reali terrible. Da feeling iz juz horrible. Esp. when i hafta take 3 pills @ a time...i hate pills. Dey make me feel even more sick. Argh. N i'm so bored. i plan 2 study. I hope i get well by 2mr. i dun wanna feel sick. i hate dis feeling. I want my life.

I wunder how was da chem CA. N i hope da band played well 4 SYF. all da bez...esp 2 Melissa, rach n WL

WESTLIFE 'BLACKLISTED' IN AMERICA

Irish pop heartthrobs WESTLIFE will never break the American charts - because they've been blacklisted by US radio stations.

The COAST TO COAST crooners have made several attempts to crack America, but have failed to impress across the Atlantic, and now bandmember NICKY BYRNE claims they will never succeed in the US because radio bosses don't like their image.

The blond singer says, "We sent over a CD of WORLD OF OUR OWN (their second LP) with no name on it.

They didn't know it was Westlife and every single radio station in the States - all came back and said that this is an absolutely huge hit.

"They said it was great for radio and people are gonna love it, especially as there's just a slight bit of rock guitar to it.

"But as soon as we revealed it was Westlife, the radio pluggers all went, 'Whoa, not Westlife - it's a boyband.

' And we cannot break that down, no matter what song we come out with.

"The problem with America is that it's all radio and you've got to break into radio first.

And currently radio doesn't want to play boy bands or pop music.

"If BONO wrote a song with us tomorrow and it was the biggest hit in the world, if Westlife's name is put to it, it won't be a hit in America because radio will not play us."

Nicky Byrne today is the idol of millions, a household name in the world of pop music as a member of the record-breaking boyband Westlife. But it could have so much different if he had been one or two more inches in height. Then it is almost certain he would have been a professional footballer, playing at the highest level.

Although he now spends most of his time between recording studios, television studios and travelling around the world with his Westlife colleagues, Nicky still retains his love and interest in football. It’s understandable when you realise that he spent almost ten years playing schoolboy soccer in Dublin, first with Home Farm for nine seasons and later with St Kevin’s.

When I contacted him about this interview I was both surprised and delighted to hear he knew all about a2zsoccer.com. He had heard about it on the Gareth O'Callaghan radio show on 2FM. "It’s a great idea" he suggested, adding "I wish you the very best of luck with it."

He was also surprised to learn that his girlfriend Georgina Ahern’s father, An Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, had launched a2zsoccer.com in October.

It was the summer of ’95 when Nicky, then a 16 year old, left home to join Leeds United. He was one of a quintet of young Irish footballers who joined the Elland Road staff that summer. Among the others were Alan Maybury and Stephen McPhail.

Although it was almost six years ago, Nicky remembers it as if it was last year and it’s obvious, despite being released by the club, that he enjoyed his time at Elland Road. "There were two Irish players in the Leeds’ first team, Gary Kelly and David O’Leary who was coming to the end of his playing career. For a while I was selected to clean the boots of Gary Kelly and Lee Sharpe" he recalled.

At the time Leeds was going through managerial change. "When I joined, Howard Wilkinson was the manager. But shortly afterwards George Graham replaced him and appointed Dave O’Leary as his assistant."

Sadly Nicky was released after two years with the club. I joked that maybe it was because they found out he was a fan of their bitter rivals, Manchester United. "Not at all" he laughed. "Yes they couldn’t believe that I admitted I was a Man Utd fan during a television interview, but it was my lack of height that was the problem" he added.

"Top class goalkeepers really need to be over six foot, ideally six foot two or more. I was regarded as a 'great little 'keeper'. But the key word was 'little'. I was 5.8 or 5.9 when I joined at 16. The hope was I would add those inches with age, but sadly it didn’t happen.

"Eddie Gray, the coach, said he would take a chance if I grew to 5.11 or 6.0. But I only made 5.10. So I was released and went on to enter the music world", he explained.

But he hasn’t lost contact with his friends at Leeds, especially Alan Maybury who was his team-mate at Home Farm for nine years. "Georgina and I stayed with Alan and his girlfriend in their house when I went back to Elland Road recently" he told me.
"It brought back some great memories. Apart from Alan, I met most of the players. The likes of Harry Kewell and Jonathan Woodgate were in the youth side when I was with the club. The coaching staff are much the same too, only this time they paid more attention to me" he joked.

"David O’Leary was so nice. He brought his young daughter to meet me, as she is a big Westlife fan."

Although the demands of the music business restrict his freedom to attend as many matches as he would like, he did get to one special game late last year. "Most of my friends were travelling to Amsterdam for the match against Holland. They all wanted me to go, but I had to attend a photo shoot in London. All day I was thinking of the lads having the craic in Amsterdam, so when the photo shoot ended at six o’clock, I headed straight for Heathrow to see if there were any flights available to Amsterdam.

"It’s only a 45 minute flight from London, so I was lucky. I got a flight and met my friends just before the game. They had a ticket for me, so everything was sorted. I spent the night with about six thousand other Irish supporters roaring our heads off. It couldn’t have been good for the voice, but what the heck, it was a night to remember.

"At one stage Ireland were two goals up on Holland. Even now it’s hard to believe. Although they hit back to draw level in the second half, it was still a special occasion that I will never forget.

"It was my first opportunity in a long time to be back with my friends watching Ireland and I made the most of it. I think we drank ‘til four or five. What’s seldom is wonderful.

"I still get the odd opportunity to see the big games if I’m at home, but now it’s usually with Georgina and her dad. Not that I’m complaining. Because of Westlife’s commitments I know my free time is limited. I’m just glad to get to then odd match whether it’s Leeds, Man Utd or Ireland."

Despite an on-off relationship with Atomic Kitten Liz, Blue's Lee says boybands should keep their girlfriends tucked away. Does he have a point? If so, was Westlife's Shane right to hide Gillian from his fans for so long? It's not a good idea to be seen out with a girlfriend, because that's going to lose you fans," says the outspoken Lee Ryan from Blue. "I mean, your female fans all want to be your girlfriend."
He should know he's had a rocky ride during his relationship with Atomic Kitten Liz McLarnon.

- SECRETS
The couple, who got it together while working in New York last September, went to great lengths to keep their snag shenanigans secret, but finally, at Bryan McFadden and Kerry Katona's wedding, they admitted all. Lee had another reason for keeping their relationship quiet. "I don't want the fans to start being horrible to her like they were with Billie when she went out with Ritchie from Five. That'd kill me."

- SHOCKING
But should pop stars keep their fans in the dark to protect their love lives? When Westlife's Shane Filan admitted last year he was dating bandmate Kian Egan's cousin, Gillian Walsh, fans were shocked. Not just because Shane became 'unavailable', but also because their idol had covered up the fact he was in a serious relationship. Shane, from Sligo, admits he's known Gillian, a business studies student, for over ten years. He also suggests they've been dating since early 2001, but some fans say it's longer than that, claiming he could have even been seeing her since 1999!

So why, when Westlife's Nicky Byrne has always been open about his fiancee, Georgina Aherne, has Shane been so secretive? And was that decision a betrayal of his fans?

- UNDER WRAPS
Shane says Gillian insisted on keeping their relationship under wraps for so long. He claims: "The reason I didn't say anything is that I didn't want her to have a different kind of life. She just wanted to be Gillian from Sligo when she was at college - not Shane from Westlife's girlfriend." He insists Gillian's "very shy" and adds: "She didn't want to be judged by other students."

- CAMERA SHY
When the press and TV cameras are out Gillian and Shane are careful not to be seen together. Their reclusive lifestyle has certainly helped: "Going to parties and PR events is not our thing. We prefer to sit in a pub in Sligo and have a laugh with our mates, says Shane. And on the rare occasions they have attended showbiz bashes, such as the World Of Our Own album launch party, the pair have been careful to arrive and leave separately. Cunning!

- MIXED UP
The Irish tabloids had been trying to uncover the truth about Shane's love life for months. And they've often reached the wrong conclusions - once publishing a photo of Shane and his sister, saying she was in fact Gillian! Shane relished the fact that they've kept one step ahead of the press. "The papers thought Gillian was dating Kian because she used to come to our concerts," he says. "But they didn't know she's his cousin and we're the ones who've been dating. Ha ha!" Last October when Shane confessed he'd been seeing Gillian, he said they'd been dating for "a year" and admitted that he had known her since he was 12.

- FURIOUS FANS
"I've been out with a couple of girls for a month or six weeks - never anything too serious," he said. It's possible Gillian was one of these girls because some reports suggest the pair dated for a couple of weeks when they were in their teens. However, according to several Westlife fans, Gillian and Shane have been loved-up for a long time. "I've heard that Shane has been going out with her on and off since he was about 17, and also that he was going out with her well before Westlife got really successful," says one fan. "I don't believe this ‘I've been with her for just over a year' thing. I've been following Westlife since the beginning of '99 and I'm sure he was going out with her then." Could this be true or simply a reaction from an angry fan? Pick up any recent magazine and you may find a quote from Shane suggesting he's still single. But he's always avoided outright deception. A year ago, referring to the possibility of settling down with a girl, he said: "If I meet a girl, 75% of the time she's only interested because of the band." It's not a lie, but it's hardly the real story, either. And if the truth was bound to come out, would Shane have been better off coming clean in the first place? Or should his loyalty be to his girlfriend? •

SNEAK SAYS OK, so Shane told a few porkie pies to cover up his romance with Gillian, and Lee and Liz attempted to keep their love hush-hush at the start. But - although it's unfair to deceive fans - both couples felt the need for privacy in the early days to give their relationships a real chance. "If they're true fans they'll be happy for us," says Lee. "And we're not going to start shoving our lives down people’s throats like Posh and Becks." Let's hope their hectic schedules don't ruin their romance. As for Shane's girl, well, she gets a big thumbs-up from Sneak - and he gets the go-ahead from Kian, who jokes: "I totally trust him with my cousin - he wouldn't be with her if I didn't!" And do we hear wedding bells? Shane says: "I can't see myself ever being happy without her. I call her the perfect package."

STUNNING model Jodie Marsh last night told all about her sizzling fling with Westlife star Kian Egan - and revealed she's never had a lover like him.
The blonde Page Three pin-up - dubbed The human form of Viagra - even rated the millionaire singer as her best-ever partner between the sheets.

Breaking her silence on the torrid two-month affair with one of pop's sexiest men, Jodie told The People: "Kian was really satisfying and accommodating - always eager to please.

"He was a very good boy, the best lover I've ever had. Like Westlife's songs, he was a complete smash hit!"

But 24-year-old Jodie, who split with Kian last week, has no regrets that she is single again.

She insisted: "I'm not heartbroken at the way things turned out. I wasn't in love with him and he wasn't in love with me. It was two consenting adults who were not looking for a relationship and but enjoying each other's company - and bodies."

Former lapdancer Jodie, who shot to fame in ITV1 documentary series Essex Wives, added: "I really couldn't say whether my performance deserved to be called Human Viagra, but I think I did all right!

"Kian found my nickname hilarious. I don't know if he would agree with it, but we had a lot of fun."

Jodie earned her reputation as a saucy sexpot after The People told how she seduced a 17-year-old schoolboy - and later thrilled another lover with "gymnastic" sex.

Irishman Kian, 22, found out for himself after splitting from Atomic Kitten babe Liz McLarnon.

Jodie and Kian would party the night away with pals in swanky West End nightclub Click before going off to his luxury pad in Chelsea, South West London. They had become friends after meeting at a pop party about a year ago...but she didn't know who he was.

She said: "I knew that Westlife were an Irish band, but that's all.

"I didn't follow them, I didn't have any of their albums and I had never seen any of their concerts.

"It was nice for Kian because I wasn't some fan just jumping on the bandwagon. There was a mutual respect there between us. I wasn't a groupie at all."

Kian ignored the lusty attentions of busty model Jordan to be with Jodie - who has been tipped to take part in the new series of I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here.

She said: "We were getting closer and closer every time we saw each other... until one day we ended up kissing.

"We never tried to keep the relationship quiet from anyone. We came out of clubs holding hands and didn't care if people saw us. We were openly kissing and cuddling in public and in Click nightclub."

Jodie would have liked to have invited Kian - whose hits include Tonight and Uptown Girl - to Brentwood, Essex, where her dad is a millionaire scaffolding contractor.

But she said: "Kian would have been totally mobbed by fans there." As it was, she said the couple's work commitments tore them apart. Jodie said: "I didn't dump him and he didn't dump me. Our split was by mutual agreement.

"We never discussed any future plans because he was going off on tour and I have TV work to concentrate on.

"Besides, I am not looking for a long-term relationship and neither is Kian."

Sigh..i juz picked up my viola..haven't been playing it 4 ages... guess wad? i cudn't even play da fast parts of tchaikovsky's waltzer properly. I feel lyk crying now. I can't belive i'm so hopeless. Sigh...my fingers r so damn painful now. Stretch lyk crazie...my fingers were reali veri stiff.. I'm so so sad....sigh....i now realize how impt my viola iz 2 me....I will practice frm now on....cuz i noe how it feels lyk if i'm not able 2 play it properly.

The stuff on Westlife

Zoiks! Looks like it's gonna be the best WESTLIFE tour ever!

"Sorry we're late!" grins five cheery Irish boys as they arrive at their top secret tour rehearsals...a little behind schedule! "We had a bit of a clothing crisis this morning," explains Mark. But it's all sorted now!" Oh dear. This is all sounding a bit worrying. With their tour manager (and some might say, sixth member) Anto gone, there's no one getting the lads up in the morning. And are they fighting about everything now - even clothes?

"Nonsense!" Bryan roars when we ask. "There's so much rubbish about us in the papers at the moment. Please don't believe it!" More of that later. First, it's time to get on with the business of the day - rehearsing for the Westlife Unbreakable Tour 2003.

And what an extravaganza it promises to be! "It's only our second day of proper rehearsals, but it's gonna be absolutely amazing," smiles Shane - despite the fact that he's suffering some serious toothache. But will he tell us all about it? Will he heck! "Aw, do I have to tell ya about it? I want it to be a surprise!" he grumbles. But don't worry, the tvhits! spies are out in full force for ya - and we eventually get the goss outta him. "We'll dance, but not in a Justin kinda way. we haven't got proper dance routines - we're crap at dancing! But don't worry, it'll still be energetic!" he reveals.

Today's the first time the lads have seen their costumes - and they're pretty cool, let us tell ya! The set and the styling have both been designed by super stylist William Baker. Hanging on the rails are lotsa black clothes - trousers with loadsa military style zips, soft-as-butter leather jackets and v-e-r-y fishnet tops. The lads approve - but then, they've had lots of input into it. "They look cool," grins Mark. "But this is only one outfit. There's gonna be loads more! We all sat down and literally designed what we wanted ourselves - like drawing out the shapes of trousers."

Clothes approved, and the boys take time out to pose for our pics. Shane's clearly the man in charge, telling everyone to shut up and listen to the photographer. The others are a bit distracted - Kian's massaging Mark's shoulders, while Bryan sneakily tries to continue a conversation on his mobile between snaps.

It might be a day for a tour rehearsals, but the boys have got loads of other bits to fit in. There's an interview for a football TV show - which they love cos it gives them a chance to go outside for a kick about! Then they do a couple of quick snaps for The Wrong Trousers charity. "It's a cool charity to help kids - we try and do as much of that as we can," reveals Bryan.

The soundtrack of the day is Uptown Girl - all day long! The band is rehearsing in the room next door, getting the song down to perfection. The lads wander through to say hello, and have a quick jam. "Picking the band was easy - we've had the same guys for ages," says Mark.

The main business of today is filming some videos which will be played on the big screens by the stage on tour. Each of the lads takes it in turns to sit on a stool, which slowly rotates while they film close up to their face. Sounds simple? It takes a-g-e-s! Nicky's first, but he's not sure about the outfit he's wearing. "I look like a plonker with the jumpsuit all done up! Can't I just tie it round my waist?" he begs the stylist. They agree - hurrah! Especially cos it means exposing loadsa Nicky chest flesh in his fishnet top!

To keep themselves entertained, Kian plays Mark some CDs he's recently burned. Are these demos of the new Westlife album? They're all up tempo in a Bop, Bop Baby style-ee, with a bit of Appleton attitude chucked in.

Finally, all five boys have been filmed and it's time to head next door to rehearse with the band. "See y'all on stage!" they grin as they leave the building. Ya sure will!

Tour secrets!
1. Bryan - It's quite minimal. You can change the atmosphere with the lighting - it can be a bright funky disco set one minute and then change to an intimate lil' room vibe. It's so cool!

2. Kian - There won't be lots of dancers distracting you from us! You can't really dance to our music anyway! But every step we take on stage will be choreographed.

3. Mark - You never know, you might get to see us all naked on this tour! The only thing that I can tell you is that we'll be getting close to absolutely everyone at some point in the show!

4. Shane - There'll be pyrotechnics, velvety backdrops, huge staircases and big screens. We're not doing proper dance routines though cos we're crap at dancing!

5. Nicky - There'll be a medley too, but we haven't decided on it yet. It's gonna be from a particular era though! People always bet me to run across the stage in my boxers - I've done it before!

Will They Split Up?

Bryan: We've all gone through stages of being fed up - but we work through it.

Shane: The papers are full of rubbish. We've signed a new five album deal, so we're not going anywhere.

Kian: To be honest, it's just funny to us to read about all this, cos we know that it's so not true. We're very much together!

Mark: I think some journalists just want to be the first with the story, so they'll make it up if it's not true. The only thing that'll stop us is if the fans don't want us!

Nicky: It's so frustrating! How many times do we have to say it's not true before people will believe us?

Bryan: It's all rubbish. I don't understand where it's come from - but it's so not true! We're working on the new album which we'll start recording while we're on tour!

'Loife crisis 2:

Did they sack Anto?
Kian: Anyone who thinks that the tour manager leaving means the end of a band is a fool!

Bryan: Not being arrogant or anything, but there's only five of us. He wasn't up there singing the songs with us! I'll miss him though - he's my Formula One buddy!

Shane: Basically, we just grew apart from him. We needed someone new and fresh, ahd so did he.

Mark: I still think of him as a really good friend. We all talk to him loads on the phone, and we'll be going to his wedding later this year.

'Loife crisis 3:

Rubbish records!

Shane: I told a DJ that I was annoyed about Bop Bop Baby. Both Bryan and I were mad cos we wrote it and the single sounded so different to the original. And I said we'd never release a rubbish song like Miss You Nights. I don't think Unbreakable is good either.

Kian: I don't think Miss You Nights and Queen Of My Heart are good songs. They're not the best we've done. We can do better.

Bryan: The whole Greatest Hits album was a rush job. There's no way we'll sing Miss You Nights on the tour - it's a rubbish song. I hated it from the first moment I heard Cliff Richard singing it.

Falling out!

Kian: All these stories are just funny to us!

Shane:Yeah, all this stuff about Mark and Kian hating each is a load of old you-know-what! They're always the last two in the bar!

Mark: It's funny, sometimes it's not till someone accuses you of hating someone else that you realise just how much you like them - and how close you really are.

Nicky: If anything, all these rumours have made us realise how well we all do get on and just how far we are from splitting up!

And academics at Glasgow Caledonian University claim listening to Connolly increased people's tolerance to pain by up to three times.

Men fared best when Dr MacDonald put on some vintage Connolly. He said: "We used some of his older stand- up sessions during the study.

"Men reacted to his rough brand of humour best and their pain tolerance zones were increased three-fold."

The team also found that listening to your favourite music can have a similar affect.

One participant was able to keep his hands in the freezing water for two-and-a-half minutes while the Prodigy's Firestarter was played. Other music chosen by subjects included U2, Tracy Chapman, Westlife and Britney Spears.

Doing mental arithmetic had the least effect on subjects.

Dr MacDonald he added: "We believe that by listening to the likes of Billy Connolly people recovering from minor operations could benefit."

60 SECONDS EXTRA! For some reason, Westlife's Shane Filan had the
nickname Shorty at school but he's since blossomed into a recording
giant following more No.1s with the Irish ballad bashers than you can
shake a stick at. The band's main singer was also voted best-looking
man in pop by Smash Hits readers not too long ago.

'Best looking man in pop' - who's your biggest rival?

That was a couple of years ago now. It's a bit embarrassing, a bit
weird but quite exciting and flattering at the same time. It's not
something I worry about keeping as a title. I think it's a bit 'who's
flavour of the month' with the kids, to be honest. Last year, Gareth
[Gates] won it - I imagine it'll be Justin Timberlake this year.

Eight No.1s. You must have been gutted when Tell Me What Makes A Man
lost out to Bob The Builder.

It's actually 11 now. I was well annoyed with that - What Makes A Man
is one of my top three Westlife tracks. But you had to laugh at it
being Bob The Builder who beat us. How can you compare with a novelty
record? So, thanks to all the kids who bought that one.

Who did the best version of Evergreen - you guys, Will Young or
Gareth Gates?

Us.

You would say that.

No I wouldn't. It's not one of my favourite songs - it was never
going to be a single for us. I was surprised Will did it - that was
down to Simon Cowell. I don't think it suits Will - and I don't think
he liked it either.

How much of a git is Simon?

He's just like he is on TV. He puts on a bit of a show now he's got
the Mr Nasty tag - he has to for TV. He's been very straight up with
us. If you're crap, he tells you. He's very honest and there's no
bullshit at all. I was in America the other week doing a documentary
and watching telly and he was all over it. Then the other night, I
was watching MTV Cribs [where stars let cameras in there home] and
they had Simon as one of the subjects. I was like: 'My God. What's
happening?'

You spend all this time trying to break America, then your A&R man
does it before you.

Gutting, isn't it? But TV shows are much easier to be accepted in the
US. The record industry is without a doubt the hardest market to
break. Personally, I don't think we'll ever do it as we won't try to
do it again. It takes too much time. We're happy with Europe, so why
bother?

Do you get fed up with love songs?

It's something we do. Westlife are a band who are known for ballads
and we've become very successful at it. If you like the lyrics and
the melody of a tune, you don't get fed up or say: 'I'm not doing
another ballad.' As the band have gone on, we've written more stuff
ourselves. On the last album, there were six or seven of ours. Some
about love, some about life. Obviously, if you write it, you feel
more passion towards it. Our market place is ballads - both the kids
and the older women like them, so why change it?

On stage, can you hear yourself think for the screaming girls?

You wear ear monitors so you can hear the singing and that tones down
most of the screams - it's like wearing two ear plugs. With all the
ballads, you get to sit down a lot to sing and, as they're slow, you
get plenty of time to chill out and think.

What's the maddest thing you've been given by a fan?

I've had nothing that bad - just the usual. Underwear thrown on stage
with letters pinned to them. Mark got a turnip sent in a bag once and
one of us got a set of weighing scales, bizarrely.

Do you pass the underwear on to the girlfriend?

No. I leave it at the venue.

Do you get embarrassed if you walk in somewhere and they're playing a
Westlife track?

I was in the pub last week having a few quiet beers with some mates.
One of our videos came on the telly and I was literally standing
under it. I was singing on the TV and standing with a pint under it.
I could feel everyone looking over and was thinking: 'Oh, my God.'
You want the floor to open up and swallow you.

EXTRA QUESTION: Your biggest idol was Michael Jackson - what do you
think of him now?

He got a fair old kicking and I think the documentaries were a little
unfair. What people don't understand is that he's in a different
world. His life is so different from the rest of us. Take the stuff
with the masks on his kids' faces. He obviously doesn't want them
growing up as Michael Jackson's son and daughter and to have their
heads wrecked by a tabloid lens in their face at every move. I can
kind of understand that. As for the abuse charges, I think if they
were really true, he'd be in jail by now.

EXTRA QUESTION: Can you equate your fame and his?

No way. He's stratospheric on a different level to us. He's probably
bigger than Elvis. Possibly the biggest star the planet has ever
seen.

EXTRA QUESTION: Did you try to copy the moonwalk?

Totally - I wasn't too bad, actually. I used to practise it all the
time. I used to copy the song Man In The Mirror and that's what got
me into music. My mum and dad would listen and say: 'You've got a
half decent voice there.'

EXTRA QUESTION: What do you listen to?

At the moment, Eminem and Coldplay. You end up listening to very
different music from that you play. When you sing Westlife all day,
you don't put them on your CD player. You want to get away from what
you do for a living - like any job.

Ok..my birfdae was da bez one i eva had all these years. Wundafool. I went out wif Claud, Des n Lish 2 watch "Just Married". It was reali farnie n nice. LYked it a lot. I got Jt's album alreadi. Not bad. But i still lyk "cry me a river" "like i love you" n "rock your body" da bez outa all his songs. Cuz da other songs were not as gd as those 3.

American idol was ok. Ricky Smith FINALLY got out! Yeah. I can't stand his voice. Phew..now i'm quite satisfied wif da top 7...i onli dun lyk Carmen. Yuck. She sang da worst eva 2nite...n 2 tink she wasn't even in da bottom 3. Goodness. I thot she wud. Josh sang well as usual. Reuben was reali reali gd. I was reali overwhelmed by his voice...it was betta den Josh's...well, juz dis time i agree. I want Clay Iken, Kimberly Locke n Caldwell 2 b out...can't stand dem. Esp. Clay. Wad's so gr8 abt him????? His voice iz powerful but not nice @ all. He lacks all da emotions needed. So fake. He's juz trying 2 make da tune sound nice...but fails 2 do so.

I jus realized tht i lyk , Justin Timberlake...n i realized tht no one here lykx him @ all. N westlife izn't popular here either. I lyk S Club Juniors..but i tink no one here has heard their songs. I went 2 Music Junction...dey din't even sell their album! Gosh... N britney iz my fave..but evryone seems 2 hate her. No one reali lykx Ronan Keating either. Ugh. Do i reali haf bad taste????????
